When heat turns into a narrative

DIN Forsyning – Telling a story about the invisible

DIN Forsyning is one of Denmark’s largest multi-utility companies and supplies district heating, water and wastewater to citizens in and around Esbjerg and Varde. As part of their green transition, they have invested heavily in future-proof solutions – including a flexible and fossil-free district heating system.

But how do you communicate a complex, technical system that few know about – and that you can’t even see?

That question became the starting point for a film we created in close collaboration with Din Forsyning.
A film that combines real footage from real homes and locations with 3D animations that visualize the invisible and technical.

The goal was to tell a story that informs, engages and creates an understanding of the district heating we all enjoy – without even thinking about it.

How history was made

When explaining something as technical as district heating, it’s crucial to find the right angle, an approach that makes the complex both understandable and interesting.

Together with Din Forsyning, we set out to create a film that not only informs, but also creates closeness and identification. It should give citizens insight into where their heat comes from – without drowning them in technical terms and diagrams.

So we began the process by developing a detailed storyboard, where we together created the framework for a narrative that balances technique and emotion. From the very beginning, it was important that the movie would speak to both the heart and the brain.

At the heart of the expression was the combination of:

  • Real footage from everyday environments and technical locations – to create a human and believable anchor.

  • 3D animations – as a visual tool to explain the invisible and technical.

Working closely with Din Forsyning’s communications team ensured that the tone, content and visual style were exactly what they wanted: a film that exudes professionalism, green responsibility and closeness to the citizens.

By thinking communication and aesthetics together from the start, we were able to create a film that not only shows how district heating works – but also why it matters.

When reality and visualization merge

To tell a story that is both engaging and informative, we consciously worked to merge real footage and 3D animations – as two sides of the same story.

The authentic footage from everyday environments and technical locations creates recognition. We see children drawing in warm living rooms, technicians in operating halls and landscapes where district heating originates. This gives the film a human connection and visual credibility.

But there’s a lot you can’t see with the naked eye – and this is where 3D animations play a crucial role. They make the invisible visible:

  • Shows how heat moves through the system

  • Explains the interaction between the different energy sources

  • Illustrates the zones and temperature regulation underground

Transitions between shots and animations are carefully timed so that the movie feels like a single movement. When the camera moves across a living room floor, the animation takes over and shows what’s happening below the surface. It is in these smooth transitions that we create the visual flow that makes the movie both easy to follow and exciting to watch.

Together, the two expressions give the film depth: the human and the technical, the recognizable and the explanatory – in a single narrative about the future of district heating.

A movie with warmth – and reverberation

The result is a film that conveys the complexity of district heating in a way that is easy to understand and enjoyable to watch. A story that takes the viewer by the hand and shows how heat is not just something we feel – but something we can understand.

The film has been used across platforms and serves as both an explanatory tool and branding film. It supports Din Forsyning’s position as a modern and responsible energy partner, while strengthening citizens’ understanding of the sustainable choice district heating is.

In close collaboration with the customer, we have created a visual narrative that not only shows a solution – but conveys a vision.
A vision of flexibility, green transition and heating with care.
